In an attempt to bring some negative publicity to Google, Facebook “secretly” hired a PR firm, Burson-Marsteller, to pitch anti-Google stories to newspapers and encourage influential bloggers to bash Google. This covert operation backfired when Facebook was exposed as Burson-Marsteller’s client.
The rivalry between Google and Facebook continues to escalate. Google sees Facebook as a serious threat to its internet domination. Facebook reportedly has 700 million users worldwide and Google has yet to come up with a competitive social media platform. Google has experimented with various tools, such as “Social Circle,” that allow Gmail users to see information not only about their friends but also about friends of their friends. Facebook claims that Google is attempting to scrape Facebook data and that Google’s social media tactics are an invasion of people’s privacy. Google hasn’t been very successful with its social media ventures and Facebook wants to keep it that way.
Let the skirmishes continue! The more competition, the better. As we’ve said, Google Adwords does not work for every business. There are alternatives, like Facebook, that may be less competitive and less expensive. If you’re interested in learning about using social media or PPC advertising, let us know.
